Since the Community Investment Note was launched 1995, Calvert Foundation has proven its ability to manage risk in underserved markets and has never lost any investor's money or returns.

Calvert Foundation's team of investment professionals use industry-leading due diligence and monitoring to select and manage a diversified portfolio of over 200 high impact investments. Our partner organizations are chosen for their financial stability and strong social impact, and more than 99.8% of our loans have been repaid.

Though the Community Investment Note is not government insured, Calvert Foundation works to ensure the safety of our investors in several ways:

  • Professional management: Before we provide loans to our partner institutions, we screen them thoroughly for financial stability, growth, and exceptional social impact. Our team of investment professionals continue to actively monitor the organizations throughout the terms of their loans.
  • Portfolio Diversification: We have investments in over 200 leading community development and microfinance institutions. Even investors who are targeted to specific geographic areas, initiatives, or specific organizations benefit from having their investment risk spread over a fully diversified portfolio.
  • Subordinated Debt and Loss Reserves: Calvert Foundation has a number of generous investors with long term investments/guarantees that provide a layer of protection to shield our standard investors from loss. We currently have $15 million in subordinated debt, in addition to the net assets and loan loss reserves of Calvert Foundation that provide a total of more than $20 milion in security enhancements.
